This week I get to bake up a bunch of cookies for one of our local GSA clubs. For those who may not know, a GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) is a social and support club in high schools or middle schools that are run exclusively by students. They only have to have a teacher to sponsor them.
According to our PFLAG chapter president they are VERY difficult to start though because a student has to initiate the formation of the club. There are all kinds of forms these kids have to fill out and creating this club makes them pretty highly visible. And as we all know high school and middle school kids are SO very accepting (please note the sarcasm) of anyone perceived as being "different". So even though the young person running this club is in another town, I am thrilled to bits to be able to support the effort that is going into this club fundraiser.
If anyone else would like to bake (or even buy and donate) a few dozed cookies or brownies let me know and I'll put you in touch with the pertinent person.
In other local news, our PFLAG chapter is going to be at the next Firday Fest in Melbourne. I'll have more details as I get them. Anyone is welcome to stop by and chat. We'll have some literature AND we'll have chocolate! Just look for the pink hair :-D
